THE CREATIVE HUB
Employment in
the creative industries sector is on average 20% lower in Hamilton*, and 43%
lower in the Waikato* than in the rest of New Zealand (*NZ Statistics 2001),
which means that many creative industries
graduates have to leave the region in order to secure work in the sector. Research has indicated that many graduates
would prefer to stay in the region if there were more job opportunities in the
local creative industries sector.
In response to this demand, the Centre for Creative Industries (CCI)
is leading the The Creative Hub project - a new creative industries hub for
start-up businesses for Hamilton, which is due to be launched in early 2008.
The Creative Hub will enable new creative start-ups to co-locate in one central CBD hub, creating a new focal point for the creative industries sector in Hamilton City. The businesses that tenant the Creative Hub will be housed within a supportive environment for creative entrepreneurs who will help grow the creative industries economy in Hamilton. The Creative Hub will be located on the top floor of The Meteor in Hamilton, which is currently undergoing refurbishment. This project is a partnership between Wintec, Hamilton City Council and local industry that aims to develop and enhance the creative sector economy in and around Hamilton.
