Creative Industries in the Waikato

Architecture

Within the Waikato region there are approximate thirty-five architects and of these, most work individually. This is primarily due to the nature of architecture and that most of the design done in the region is small scale and residential in nature. Some of the individual designers in the region will work on larger projects however - several of the high profile works done within the region have been completed by the following businesses.
  • Chibnall Swan Architects have designed many commercial and industrial buildings within the region, and including work for the University of Waikato and the Gallagher Group. This operation is a working group that is focused around two individuals that draws talent from the region.
  • Antanas Procuta Architects are a group of 7 architects who have also worked on several larger residential projects in the region and are also developing ties to creative business initiatives along with other businesses in the area.
Within the industry in the region, most of the work done by individual architects is residential (approximately 75 per cent of clients) but commercial work also makes up an important contribution to employment. Most of the residential work done by the offices in the region is for the Waikato area, however designers sometimes have clients from across the North Island. Sole or independent operators' stress that while collaboration on work may be sparse, unofficial links exist, and architects also belong to various national associations such as the New Zealand Institute of Architects which provides a contact point. Contracts are mostly gained through word of mouth and this is especially true concerning residential work, but some architects use a number of promotional tools to gain business for themselves. For example, they may promote their ability to liaise with others in the construction industry or special skills or technology they might have. Gisler Architects, for example, maintains a special relationship with the Ministry of Education to work within their specific guidelines and needs for designing schools.
