Film and Television Production

Major television and film productions are rare within the Waikato since most of the infrastructure and larger companies are based in Auckland which is relatively close. Still the region has numerous production companies and community television.
  • Family Television Network is based is in Matamata and employs 20 staff, it is run as a charity organisation and produces local content show with a focus on family safe content. In terms of production the FTN are quite large and well established.
  • TVNZ the state broadcaster operates an office within the region, however this not a production office but handles sales and marketing.
  • Most of the production companies within the region are quite small employing one or two personnel. Most of the work gained by these companies is from the region and is gained through word of mouth.
Because there is a limited demand for film and television production most production companies specialise in filming events, corporate activities and offering technical services such as duplication. Most of the production companies in the region are small, but they are also highly adaptable and sub-contracting other agents does occur in order to complete larger projects. There is a lot of potential within the Waikato for more television and film projects, for example Big TV (currently in broadcasting hiatus) located at the University of Waikato is a community based television station that could become a community broadcasting hub in the Hamilton area. Also there is a vibrant student film scene which is situated around talent from Wintec and Waikato University. There are two factors which threaten the industry in region firstly, the relationship between the New Zealand Film Commission and prominent local film organisations is not strong. Secondly there is a tendency for productions from outside the region bringing talent with them rather than hiring here, this is true even for companies based in the region who will sometimes need to sub-contract to non-Waikato talent. Also, the larger national broadcasters have no presence within the Waikato and this means that the links that do exist between Waikato business and these large broadcasters are generated from long time association or word of mouth. This makes it difficult for new operations to offer their services to a visiting larger company.
