Software Development/Interactive Games Developers are not very common within the region and most of the operations in the region are very small.

There are a number of IT companies who specialise in solutions, specifically website design or hosting options although this using existing software packages. Also there are a large number of retailers who specialise in software and hardware. However while there is definitely infrastructure available and many support businesses in operation there are only a small number of firms making original software, based on listing and internet presence it would be fair to estimate the figure at being less than 5.

Of the smaller operations Ignition Software Ltd was the only company that had clients overseas and throughout New Zealand. Most of the other operations worked within New Zealand and had gained clients from advertising and providing an online presence. There was some interest into the notion of a central touch point for developers within the region because there was a common perception that there were no developers in the region and that in order to obtain that service the potential client had to contact someone in Auckland. Ignition represents some of the typical features of software development in the region in that it employs relatively few employees, in this case one. Also geography plays no part or a very minimal part in securing clientele.

Within the region Endace Technologies manufactures firmware rather than software and it has quite large presence. In Hamilton it employs 32 staff and maintains four branches nationally. The company has major international clients and develops software for its own products at the Hamilton branch.

Software and games development are not large industries within New Zealand, games development in particular is quite expensive for limited return and often requires vast investment if the game is to be an international success.
