Māori Creative Industries

Specifically Māori creative industries are hard to identify in the region this is due to a number of reasons. Most individual artists sell their work to all types of clients and this means sometimes selling work through galleries or through word of mouth. Stores that sell Māori products tend to fall into two categories. Giftware stores which may sell some Māori crafts, galleries may also have work that has been made by Māori artists. This industry does not seem to be assertive in regards to promotion, and appears to operate on word of mouth. However there are many different types of Māori business in the region there are very few that are openly related to the creative industries. In order for more Māori creative industries to become established or least prominent a directory of Māori cultural business would be essential. The Brown Pages did fulfil this role but it is not clear if it is currently being updated.
