Publishing

Publishing in Hamilton and the Waikato is not a large creative sector, and within this sector newspaper publishing is the biggest.
  • Fairfax New Zealand Limited operates the largest publishing operation in the Waikato region. The Waikato Times which employs over 250 staff has a very large circulation and prints 41,000 copies daily. Fairfax also publishes several of the local community papers and business directories. Fairfax is an international media group based in Australia and controls the majority of the newspaper publishing industry in New Zealand, which it bought from Rupert Murdoch's INL group.
  • Waikato Business Publications Limited is a relatively small independent publishing group. It employs 7 and maintains contracts with the local council which provides most of its regional revenue. Nationally it publishes several scientific texts which are distributed throughout New Zealand.
  • Waikato Community Newspapers another independent, this group publishes community newspapers. Its main area of operation is in Hamilton although it has distribution along fourteen of the rural delivery routes. The group is based in Hamilton and employs 17 staff members.
Within the Waikato the publishing industry is dominated by newspaper, of which there are only a few independent operations. Within Hamilton there is some alternative media, such as student publications run from the university and Wintec. Other forms of publishing are quite small and most of these work on a national scale and do not rely solely on the region for a customer base - and example would be the Māori current affairs magazine Tumai. Also there are specialist community newspapers and publications, these are rather small and virtually all of them are distributed in main centres in the region. The publication of guides is an activity which concerns most of the publishers in the region. These guides are sometimes monthly or yearly publications for the general public, local government purposes or tourist information. The publication of directories is another important activity undertaken by the main publishers in the region.
