Radio

Within the Waikato there are numerous radio stations in operation these vary from purely community based radio to commercial stations.
  • Radio Works, based in Hamilton employs over 50 personnel in the region which include administrative staff and sales teams. Stations which operate through Radio Works include More FM, The Breeze, The Rock, The Edge, Solid Gold, Radio Pacific and Radio Live. Of these stations, only More FM and The Breeze are locally produced the rest are created outside of the region with advertising tailored to the local area. Some recording and ad creation is done in the Hamilton branch. Broadcast transmission for these stations covers the entire Waikato, and are all nationally broadcast with the exception of The Breeze and More FM. National advertising is provided through agencies which in most cases is The Radio Bureau.
  • The Radio Network transmits throughout the greater Waikato and employs 30 staff in various roles mostly in administrative and financial roles. This group operates 89.8ZM, Classic Hits, Hauraki FM, Newstalk ZB and Radio Sport. All of these stations are produced outside of the Waikato with local content (advertising) created in the creative hub the company operates which is based in Auckland. Again, national advertising and formatting is produced by the Radio Bureau.
  • Tainui FM operates in the Waikato area and broadcasts throughout the Tainui region. It employs 11 staff and draws most of its advertising content from the Maori Media Network and the Radio Bureau. It attempts to also create a focus on Maori business. It also functions as a community station providing information from government agencies regarding health and education issues.
In the region there approximately twenty broadcasters, however there are a number of smaller broadcasters with very limited range. Also, Radio Works operates provincial subsidiaries such as Coromandel FM which employs 14 staff and serves just the Coromandel area. Radio Network also operate provincial stations such as Forestland FM. All provincial stations belonging to both of these groups use advertising from national advertising agencies. Independent and community radio also exists within the region. Usually broadcasting on the AM frequency, community radio serves as non-commercial entities to provide the community with opportunities for specialist content and forums. Independent broadcasting is also strong with Contact 88.1 FM broadcasting from the university. Although small it employs 10 volunteers, it is well established and has been broadcasting since 2003 after being closed several years ago. Hamilton has no student radio under the national B Networks umbrella. Although there is a high concentration of stations within the region, none of the larger stations produce much local content with the exception of tailored advertising.
