Visual Arts

There are a number of artists in the region but most of the visual arts in the region are purchased through the gallery system. Within the Waikato region there are a number of galleries which cater to the numerous types of artists that are located in the region.
  • Artspost is a community gallery featuring works from around the region and is administered by the city council. Its function is to promote local art and cultural activities within the region. It does this through providing public exhibition space for local, national and international artists. It also functions as a hub for local arts in the region as it hosts workshops, classes and provides a common meeting ground.
  • Commercially oriented galleries (approximately 20) are where more well established artists sell their work. Thornton Art Gallery is perhaps the best example of this. A well established business the gallery caters to the needs of active visual arts consumers and also provides other services such as framing and selling arts supplies. The focus of the artwork here is on national and regional as well as some international work.
The gallery system is fairly typical in the Waikato: for a fee galleries display and sell works on behalf of the artist. Galleries will usually ask for a set percentage of the sale price and then will host the work. Smaller galleries are located in a number of areas around the Waikato some of which are located around or near common tourist routes also cafés and other small boutique or curio stores may display work to sell on behalf of the artist. Inner city Hamilton also hosts a number of contemporary and mixed-media spaces for display. Recently, within the inner city a number of smaller galleries have established themselves, for example the concentration of spaces around Barton Street.
